Tuesday 18th of September, 6:30pm, Maroubra
I’ll be presenting a free seminar with Luke Vu PhD, on healthy screen habits. Smart phones, tablets, laptops and other devices are an integral part of the modern world. These devices have made work and leisure tasks more efficient, and have opened up new pathways to social connection and fun. On the other hand, mounting evidence suggests that there are significant health risks associated with screen/application over-use. Luke and I will be talking about recent research on screen-based applications and their relationship to mental health and addiction. Particular focus will be on video game use, social media, pornography and gambling. We aim to provide practical advice for controlling your own use and fostering a healthy digital culture in your household.
Who should come:
- People who are concerned about their own device use and want to regain control
- Family members who want to foster a healthy digital culture in their homes
- Anyone interested in learning about the impact of mental health by new technologies
Topics discussed will include:
- Warning signs for problematic use. How does a digital addiction develop? The link between electronic applications, avoidance and mental health problems.
- Rules for maintaining healthy use. Do I have an addiction? How much is too much? Science on emerging field of screen addiction.
- Five steps to regain control of your use. How do I cut down without missing out?
- Healthy habit households. Building a Digitally Healthy culture in your family.
- How parents’ can talk about technology use with young people. Learn about your family’s habits and teach and model good digital hygiene.
